(William R. Thibert – President & Chief Executive Officer, Alexandra Marine & General Hospital along side CHESTER – Energy stewardship mascot)
Following the creation of a high level, committed Green Team, Alexandra Marine & General Hospital along with Maitland Valley Medical Centre in Goderich solicited the help of CHESTER to facilitate the behaviour change component of their “going green” plan. The hospital launched their Energy Stewardship Program in partnership with Chester and London’s hospitals on April 20, 2010 and celebrated with non other than Chester himself. The hospital champion behind the mascot for AMGH is Meribeth Vlemmix, Director of Support Services who will be working with hospital employees to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Chester was visited by over 100 of the 250 employees at AMGH that day, each learning about the amount of energy being used at the hospital and its connection to climate change, air pollution and acid rain. For their participation, each received a free tote bag and energy saving kit from Union Gas containing an energy efficient shower head and faucet aerators. Once these energy saving kits have been installed, the employees will be saving over two million liters of water each year and reducing annual carbon dioxide emissions by over 22,000 kilograms. Not to mention, realizing over $10,000 a year in energy savings. From this point on, Chester will be helping the hospital employees become more efficient with their energy use at the hospital and at home. Any questions regarding the program or energy saving suggestions for the hospital can be e-mailed to Chester directly. The energy stewardship program will be a lead-in for having all hospital staff engaged in helping the hospital to create an environmentally sustainable organization. A big thank you to all staff for their participation in the launch and the program as it continues to roll out in the upcoming months.
